Animal-Assisted Therapy

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) incorporates animals into treatment to enhance emotional and physical healing, leveraging the human-animal bond to achieve specific therapeutic goals.

Healing with Animals in Boulder

  • What is Animal Assisted Therapy?

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a therapeutic intervention that involves animals as a fundamental part of the treatment process.

This approach utilizes the unique bond between animals and humans to facilitate emotional and physical healing. AAT can incorporate a variety of animals, including horses, dogs, cats, and birds, into sessions tailored to meet specific therapeutic goals.

  • How Does Animal Assisted Therapy Work?

Animals in AAT provide comfort, reduce stress, and offer a non-judgmental presence that can enhance the therapeutic environment. These interactions help to divert attention away from stress and towards a more pleasurable interaction, promoting a sense of calm and safety.

  • What are some of the Techniques Used in Animal Assisted Therapy?

    AAT sessions may include:

    • Direct interaction with animals, such as petting or caring for the animal
    • Structured activities that involve the animals, such as guided walks with dogs or grooming sessions with horses
    • Therapeutic goals that are achieved through activities designed to increase socialization, reduce anxiety, or improve motor skills

  • What are the Benefits of Animal Assisted Therapy?

    Mental and Emotional Health

Interacting with animals has been shown to increase levels of serotonin, prolactin, and oxytocin in the brain, which can help reduce feelings of depression and anxiety. AAT is effective in treating a range of conditions, including stress, anxiety, depression, ADHD, and autism, among others.

    Physical Health

AAT has been linked to improved cardiovascular health, reduced blood pressure, and improved overall physical well-being. Sessions with therapy animals have also been shown to decrease the amount of medication some patients need.

    Social and Behavioral Improvements

For individuals with emotional and behavioral challenges, such as children with autism or patients with Alzheimer's disease, AAT can enhance communication skills, increase focus and attention, and improve interactions with others.

  • What to Expect in Animal Assisted Therapy?

    Session Structure

Depending on your needs, AAT sessions can vary. You might interact with a therapy dog during regular psychotherapy sessions, learn to ride and care for a therapy horse, or have a therapy animal visit your home or hospital room.

    Integration with Conventional Therapy

In my practice, I integrate AAT with traditional psychotherapeutic techniques, providing a comprehensive treatment approach that leverages the therapeutic benefits of human-animal interaction.

  • How to Choose an Animal Assisted Therapist?

It's crucial to work with a therapist who is not only skilled in AAT but also someone with whom you can form a strong, trusting relationship. As a licensed therapist with extensive training in AAT, I offer personalized therapy sessions that incorporate animal interactions to enhance the therapeutic process.
